Abstract

Background and Originality: Workplace well-being represents positive and connecting concepts and includes several factors that contribute to the health and quality of life of employees. The purpose of the research is to define the dimensions of well-being in the workplace based on a review of the views of various authors and to identify factors with positive and negative impacts on employee well-being and related impacts on the organization.

Method: The research is based on a review of the existing literature. The search was limited to the SpringerLink search database. Based on the research questions asked, we determined the keywords and the period of the search, which included open-ended scientific and professional articles published between 2010 and 2022. The search string offered 123 such articles. In the following discussion, we have included articles in which various authors present aspects and factors influencing well-being. 37 articles met the criteria. The results of main findings are shown in the tables.

Results: Perceived factors that positively affect the well-being of employees are autonomy and high control over work, coaching intervention, flexible work, fatigue risk management intervention, management support, positive psychology interventions, policy reduction, optimism and positive emotions, good interpersonal relationships, feedback and achieving goals. The main factors with a negative impact were the behavior of supervisors, psychosocial risks/work stress, lower levels of information and interpersonal justice, job insecurity, poor professional reputation, and disrespectful behavior. Factors related to employee well-being that show impacts on the organization are staff turnover, absenteeism, presentism, impact on productivity, early retirement, employee engagement, and quality of work performed.

Society: The article contributes to understanding the importance of creating healthy jobs. The introduction of various approaches based on promoting the well-being of employees in the workplace increases their satisfaction, which results in greater commitment to the organization and commitment to work and at the same time contributes to reducing absenteeism because of dissatisfaction at work. It also contributes to the overall positive attitude, reducing the extent and intensity of stressors, which significantly contributes to the better health of the general population.

Limitations / further research: The research is limited to a review of the existing literature of one of the electronic databases. In the continuation of the research, other bases could be included, and elements that promote the well-being of employees in the workplace could actually be implemented in a specific organization. Checking the situation before and after the introduction, within a certain time frame, would open up new possibilities for determining the statistical characteristics and success of the implementation itself.
