Research question: The article notes whether the state of health is a key dispositional obstacle to involving the questioned elderly in the lifelong learning in homes for the elderly.
Purpose: The elderly encounter various obstacles in homes for the elderly. We wish to study how they face them.
Method: The survey data were analysed using the following statistical methods: descriptive and causal-experimental method of empirical pedagogical research.
Results: There are many obstacles (spatial and content) for the elderly in homes for the elderly but the main one is the view of the elderly, the beliefs that were formed by the stereotyped role of a disabled elderly person.
Organisation: In spite of all obstacles encountered in the third and fourth ages, the elderly should participate in the activities in homes for the elderly, which are available to them according to their psycho-physical abilities.
Society: The elderly who participated in the research face certain constraints that are conditioned by their abilities (visually impaired, deafness, movement obstruction, dementia, etc.). All stakeholders should be informed about the increasing importance of these.
Originality: This kind of research is the first among the elderly in the homes for the elderly in Slovenia.
Restrictions/further research: The survey questionnaire was intended for the elderly in the third and fourth ages, who live in homes for the elderly, but not for the managing, professional and technical staff who greatly contribute to quality life and welfare of the occupants. Therefore, it would be desirable to examine their opinions and compare them with the current findings.
